Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño finished with a 70 (PAR) after the third round of the Greenbrier Classic. It was an organized, consistent round, without too many mishaps, the only thing that was missing was the rhythm to pick things up.
The Madrid native has maintained an accumulated total of below par, but went down a few positions in ranking because there were more than triple the results below par throughout the first hours of this round. The hundred-year-old Old White TPC let up a bit today.
Gonzalo started with a bogey on the 1st hole and saved a great par on the 2nd, sinking the putt from almost two meters away after missing the green. A complicated start that by no means dictated the rest of the game. From that moment on, his game came together nicely, he started to catch the greens and opened up a series of good options, like on the 3rd from less than four meters away, or the clearest of all of them, on the 4th, from three meters away. His first birdie came on the 7th, after landing a great putt from a little less than three meters away, although shortly thereafter he fell back again with another bogey on the 9th after a painful three-putt from seven meters away from the hole.
The second nine holes were a matter of catching the greens and complicated options for the birdie that didn't quite come together, with the exception of the 12th, par 5, where he played by the books. There, his efforts paid off on the field, but he needed a long putt, of those we like to call 'bonus' to kick things into overdrive.
