Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño has made a substantial change to his calendar after the Travelers Championship, which ended this past Sunday, Gonzalo making a dignified 26th place.
The Madrid native went to Spain this week to be with his family and will not be playing the BMW International Open in Cologne, a tournament which was initially marked on his calendar. He plans on taking advantage to rest up and recharge his batteries to start fresh on a new sequence of big tournaments, according to how things turn out, and worst case scenario, it could even be up being eight weeks in a row.
Thus, Fernández-Castaño's plans are to fly back to the US next Monday to play in the following chain of tournaments consecutively: the Greenbrier Classic, the John Deere, back to Europe for the Open Championship in Royal, Liverpool, and turn right back around to return to North America to play the RBC Canadian Open, the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, the PGA Championship and the Wyndham Championship.
If all goes as planned, it's possible that the Spanish golfer will make adjustments to the schedule, cutting out the tournament in Canada, for example. In any case, if he completes these seven tournaments and qualifies for the first playoff of the FedEX Cup (Barclays), just one week after Wyndham, he would be playing for eight weeks in a row, non-stop.
Like we said, these are the initial plans, but they are subject to change according to how the results turn out in these next few weeks. Gonzalo left the Travelers much more satisfied with his game.
