Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-3) finished the third round of the Travelers Championship with a 71, and considering how things were turning out in the first two thirds of the round, it was a big blow for the Spanish golfer.
Because after the first ten holes at the TPC River Highlands (Cromwell, Connecticut), with a partial score of -4 on that stretch, Gonzalo was even in the running for the victory. He got that far with a solid game off the tee, with excellent second shots to the flag, catching the first ten regulations greens without fault and landing a good majority of the balls very close to the hole. His swing was fluid and smooth as silk...
On hole 11, par 3, he missed his first green of the day, but recovered nicely moving right along. And on the 12th, he made his first bogey. Nothing, on the other hand, out of the ordinary. Mistakes happen even during the best rounds of golf. But the Spanish golfer lost his rhythm and all the good vibes after the second shot from hole 13, par 5, from the fairway. He was more than 200 meters away from the hole and he went for it, but his shot was off to the left and went to the water, still managing to finish with a bogey. And from then on, nothing was the same. In fact, he didn't catch not even one fairway, error after error finishing up as just another number. A tough end and an even tougher realization: Fernández Castaño's best golf is there, knocking at the door, but as he himself has said on various occasions throughout 2014, it's been tough to get the job done, and to find an equilibrium.
