Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño didn't make the cut at the US Open held this week at Pinehurst Nº2. A second round of 76 for an accumulated total of +12. Another setback during a tough, complicated season.
The Spanish golfer showed up to the course this morning ready to give it another shot at making the cut to play over the weekend. He started out with a birdie on the 10th hole, playing by the book, drive straight to the center of the fairway, great placement for the second shot, irons to the green just four meters from the hole and an incredible putt. It was a promising start, but it went downhill quickly. He made three bogeys in a row on holes 12, 13 and 14, and from there it was difficult to get back into it. Once again, his putt was no help. He missed two short putts for par on the 12th and 13th hole, and two great options for a birdie on the 17th and 18th. Nothing went as it was supposed to at this US Open.
"I'm going to take advantage of this weekend to reflect. I'm not going to beat myself up over it, rather think about all that's happened this season. Now I have the Travelers and the BMW International Open, and after that we'll see. I might take two weeks off to recharge my batteries, or I'll come back to the US to continue playing", he affirmed. Gonzalo played his heart out on the course trying to make it through the cut, but his game just wasn't good enough for such a demanding course as Pinehurst. "None of the 14 clubs worked out well, but if I had to say which one was the worst, I would say the putter", he said.
"I hit the ball really well off the tee today, although my game wasn't as refined with the irons and the putter. In any case, there's still a lot left of the season to make a comeback.
As far as the tournament, the solid, historical leader is Martin Kaymer (-10). He broke the record of the least shots in the US Open after playing 36 holes (130) and he's going into the weekend with a solid lead over the rest of the second-standing golfers.
