Gonzalo Fernández Castaño already knew something was up when he arrived to the practice course at Pinehurst No. 2. His swing wasn't on point, and he wasn't comfortable. These bad vibes don't always translate to a rough day of golf, but when someone's confidence level is low, it's difficult to come back from.
Tough first round of the US Open for Gonzalo. The Spanish golfer finished with a 76, with two birdies and eight bogeys. A difficult start, although nothing has been compromised yet. Not even close. What's more, Gonzalo is willing to fight for it and battle it out, he wouldn't give in so easily. “I'm going to shoot for a good round tomorrow, and fight for each and every shot to make the cut. That's the goal”, he affirms.
Gonzalo's got a big challenge ahead, but it's far from impossible. The provisional cut after the first 18 holes puts him at a +3, which means that tomorrow he could easily end up with a +5 or +6. In other words, a total of 69 wouldn't hurt, by no means easily obtainable at Pinehurst, but which today was achieved by ten golfers.
The leader of the US Open is a good friend of Gonzalo's , Martin Kaymer, who finished with a 65.
