Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño (-8) finished off a noteworthy weekend in the Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open. After making the cut with a fantastic eagle on the very last hole on Friday, the golfer from Madrid took advantage of the weather, and with two rounds of 71 and 68 shots, he made up for lost ground in the rankings.
Sunday’s round stood out between the two. Gonzalo had a partial score of seven under par after 16 holes. He was on track to turn in the best card of the day at the Heritage Golf Club, with the par 5 on the 18th left to play, but the 17th came across his path first and did a lot of damage.
Gonzalo made a triple bogey, leaving him with a bitter taste in his mouth, a similar occurrence that had repeated itself throughout the season. Not even on the best days has he been able to completely finish the job and see it all the way through.
Be that as it may, there are many positive points to walk away with this week. He played four rounds under par, he made twelve birdies between Saturday and Sunday, and he made the cut on Friday with one miraculous shot. More than sufficient to be able to leave with his head held high and a smile on his face.
After this tournament, Gonzalo will be taking a long break. He will not be competing at the very least over the next two and a half months. It depends on whether or not he makes it to Oman. Time to reset, recharge his batteries, and to work on his swing for next season.
