Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño (-3) made the cut in the Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open with a miraculous shot on the 36th hole of the tournament.
The golfer from Madrid had one foot halfway out the door already. It was the last hole of the day, the 9th, and he needed an eagle to make the cut. It's a short par 4, making it technically possible. In fact, it was here two years ago where Spanish golfer, Javier Colomo, made the first and only hole in one in the history of the European Tour on a par 4.
However, just because it was technically feasible didn't make it probable by any means. So much so that until Gonzalo’s stellar performance today, nobody in the tournament had managed to pull off an eagle.
Fernández-Castaño hit a solid drive off the tee, slightly off the tip, but enough to land the ball between the water and the bunker, 29 yards from the hole. From there, he made a spectacular chip and sank it in the hole. Two on the last hole for a final score of 71 shots. Mission accomplished, he made the cut even when all the odds were against him.
Apart from the magic shot, Gonzalo played much better than yesterday. In fact, he should have finished with a better score than a 71, but he wasn't very fine tuned on the greens, an ongoing pattern in the last few tournaments.
