Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño was on the 12th hole yesterday when the suspended play sirens went off in the third round of the FedEX St. Jude Classic. They weren’t exactly poorly received either. There’s a long Sunday ahead, or another rough Saturday for the Spanish golfer.
Until things came to a sudden halt, Gonzalo had made nine pars and two bogeys in eleven holes. Another round of getting his hands dirty. His game wasn’t very refined off the tee (three fairways in eight attempts), which meant that he had to swim against the current, so to speak, in almost every hole.
On top of that, his putt didn’t exactly help either when he needed it. He had several opportunities for birdies from three and five meters away, which would have given him a little room to breathe, but they just wouldn’t sink. It wasn’t his day. Long waits, and the machine needed to be oiled.
And now for a marathon of a day of 24 holes, lots of margin ahead, anything can happen. Not even the leader, Ben Crane, with a nice cushion of four shots ahead, can rest easy.
