Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño will play in the Open de France at the legendary Le Golf National in Paris, host to the Ryder Cup just under a year ago. The golfer from Madrid will start the second-to-last tournament of the season on the regular calendar (apart from the final series) with the goal of taking the final leap toward maintaining the European Tour card.
The objective is not too far out of reach. To be specific, the golfers who will maintain the card at the moment are the top 117, seeing as how the five associate members don’t count, including Jon Rahm and Patrick Reed, who have played in less than 25 tournaments in the European Tour in their careers and, outside of the Majors and WGCs, they didn’t make it up to six this year.
Gonzalo is less than fifty points away from his goal, which means that with a sole eighth place, with which he would accumulate 68.7 points, he would earn the rights to the card, without having to go into the Portugal Masters under pressure. He’s always got Vilamoura as a Plan B, regardless of what happens this week.
Gonzalo will play in the first two rounds with Anton Karlsson and Lorenzo Gagli.
