Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-1) closed out the Open with a 72, one over par, finishing in 48th place, a score which has helped him to continue accumulating points, but insufficient, however, in resolving his delicate situation in the Race to Dubai.
The Spanish golfer didn't have a great day on the tee shots, essential condition on a course like the Olgiata Golf Club, but in any event, he fought valiantly to the bitter end in attempts to win the battle against the course, with three birdies and four bogeys. The good news is that he managed to accumulate a handful of points in the Race (32.2), enough to move up two spots (now 125th).
Fernández Castaño will play in the Open de France next week, where he would need to finish somewhere around fifth place in order to definitively secure the rights to play in the European Tour in 2020, and he will have another opportunity the week after in Portugal.
