Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño will play in the Italian Open starting this Thursday, European Tour tournament which immediately brings a smile to face. He has taken home the win on two separate occasions in this tournament, once in 2007 and again in 2012, making for the only double win in the European Tour in his trophy room.
It’s worth nothing, however, that even though he has won the Italian Open twice, it has never been on the course where the tournament will be hosted this year, the Olgiata GC in Rome, which means that the tournament is the same, but not the playing grounds. Be that as it may, Italy always gives Gonzalo good vibes.
The Good vibes he’ll need in order to accomplish his mission: operation save the European Tour Card. He’s been on a quest for that outstanding score for several weeks now, which would allow him to ‘seal the deal’, and thus avoid unnecessary difficulties on this last stretch of the season, and above all, to cross the European Tour School off his list. The Italian Open is a Rolex Series, which means that a good score could secure him the rights to play for next year. A sole twelfth place, to be exact, would be sufficient.
