Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+1) shot a 72 in the second round, and did not make the cut. An erratic and unfortunate finale sealed the Spanish golfer’s fate, who was left with no room to work with, and no time to react.
The wind had died down a bit compared to Thursday, thus pushing the cut line under par, but Fernández Castaño, thanks to an improvement in his long game, had everything under control, with a partial score of two under on the first fourteen holes, with no bogeys on his card on this extended stretch of the round, and with two par 5s on the last part of the course left to play. It seemed as though he had it in the bag, and all that was left was to finish the job...
However, a double bogey on the 16th hole, followed by a bogey on the 17th, left Gonzalo with no room to maneuver, who finished out the round with a birdie, although insufficient, on the 18th hole.
Gonzalo will play next week in the BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth, a Rolex Series Tournament with lots of points at stake, where a good performance could be the definitive one in reaching his objective to save the card for 2020, although in order to do so, he’ll have to step up his game.
