It was finally the night of the TPC Southwind in Memphis when Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño sank a spectacular putt from five meters away for a birdie on hole 18 to put the golden seal on an incredible first round at the FedEX St. Jude Classic.
The Spanish golfer is provisionally placed in the top ten of the tournament, pending the completion of the round, which was suspended due to lack of light with sixty players still on the course.
Gonzalo made six birdies, one bogey and one double bogey for a total of 67, a great start to a day that truly couldn't have gone worse, in which the only bonus came precisely on the 18th hole.
Fernández Castaño should be very satisfied with the results, but more so with his game, much more consistent from tee to green than in the previous weeks. He didn't get caught up in too many problems, with a percentage of fairways and greens higher than seventy percent, a great way to celebrate the birthday of caddy and friend, Jeff Paul.
Gonzalo is four shots from the leader, Ben Crane, and tied with Phil Mickelson, an amazing way to start off the tournament, which was greatly affected yesterday by a storm that suspended play for more than three hours. Gonzalo will play the second round tomorrow starting at 14:40Spanish time, seeing as how the the schedule has been pushed back by forty minutes.
