Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-4) finished the Scandinavian Invitation with another round of 68 shots, two under for the day, the same as Saturday, for a final outcome of 59th place, far from the ‘hot zone’.
The Hills Golf & Sports Club in Gothenburg demanded a high percentage of birdies in order to fight for the win (the winner, Erik Van Rooyen, finished with a -19), but the Spanish golfer’s overall performance left some positive points to be considered: the stats say it was his most solid, consistent week of the season in terms of his game from tee to green. The percentage of fairways hit (76.9) and regulation greens hit (77.8) on Swedish terrain were, by far, the best since he started in Mauritius, this past December, almost nine months ago now.
In fact, the previous week in the Czech Republic, he had already noticed a significant improvement in that aspect, solidified in Gothenburg. It’s true that it’s always possible for the ball to land a little closer to the hole, but these stats in and of themselves are excellent news for the Spanish golfer, seeing as how it’s that very aspect of the game on which he’s worked the hardest in 2019. This week, he needed a bit more accuracy and luck with the putter.
Gonzalo will play in the Omega European Masters next week, at the Crans-Sur-Sierre Golf Club in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
