Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-2) shot up twelve spots (now 41st place) in the rankings in the Irish Open with a 69 in the third round, marked by scattered rainfall.
The Spanish golfer fought with determination to move up, with a total of five birdies, but unfortunately accompanied by bogeys as well, due in large part to the inconsistency from tee to green, the painstaking source of headache for Gonzalo this week at the Lahinch Golf Club.
In any event, today’s outcome was positive, and there is still a lot of room to work with in the last and final round of the tournament on Sunday. It’s important to keep in mind that it’s a Rolex Series tournament where there are many points up for grabs, which means any improvement in the rankings can be significant.
And, approximately, but not officially, the golfer from Madrid would need to finish in sixth place this week in order to practically seal the deal in maintaining the rights to play in the European Tour 2020. He’s far from the goal at the moment (eight shots away), but anything even remotely close would help alleviate some of the pressure in his situation in the Race to Dubai.
Gonzalo will play on Sunday starting at 9:20 am (one hour later CEST), with British golfer, Richard McEvoy.
