Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-8) finished with the second best score in the last round of the Irish Open, a 64 that was only topped by a 62 by tournament champion, Jon Rahm (-16). An outstanding performance that allowed him to move up more than twenty places in the rankings, and thus make his way to the top 20 of the tournament (19th), not to mention the amount of points he earned for the Race to Dubai, where he shot up almost thirty spots in the rankings.
The Spanish golfer got a complete ‘crash course’ today with the irons and putter, closing the front nine of the Lahinch Golf Club with a partial score of five under par and a total of 29 shots. A double bogey on the 10th hole put a temporary halt on things, but he quickly proved that it was nothing but a fluke: “it was a very silly double bogey, hitting the second shot with a 9 iron, but coming off the green I told myself I had to finish the back nine under par and I did it with three birdies, so I’m really proud of that reaction”.
In effect, the golfer from Madrid polished off the round with a total of eight birdies, one of his best performances of the year without a doubt, if not the best. Next week he’ll play in another Rolex Series tournament, the Scottish Open, where a final outcome in tenth place would practically lock in the first of his major objectives, which is to maintain the rights to play in the European Tour in 2020.
