Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-1) made the cut in the Irish Open with a 70 in the first round. A very well-crafted card for PAR, and as a result, he’ll be playing in one of the first games on Saturday in attempts to make a comeback.
The Spanish golfer still had a few tricks up his sleeve around the greens at Lahinch Golf Club, it’s no small feat to make it through to the weekend only having hit half the regulation greens in the first two rounds (18/36).
Apart from the courage and thick skin he demonstrated, closing with two birdies in the last third of the round to finish just within the cut line, the good news is that the rankings are very tight and, even just the slightest improvement in his stats in his long game would mean he could move up quite a bit on the scoreboard. The golfer from Madrid is now just five shots from the top ten of the tournament (and eight from the leader, Zander Lombard), for instance.
Gonzalo will play on Saturday in one of the first games, starting at 7:30 in the morning (one hour later CEST) alongside British golfer, Jack Singh Brar.
