Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-1) started out in the Irish Open with a 69, which places him just inside the provisional cut line for now, after a round in which there were many cards under par. The legendary Lahinch Golf Club course did not have the power of the strong winds on its side this time, which is prevalent with these types of courses.
The Spanish golfer had some problems with his long game, and more specifically with the second shots, only managing to hit half of the regulation greens. However, he had an excellent recovery rate around the greens (7/9), and was also solid with the putter. He is currently six shots away from the leader, Irish golfer Padraig Harrington (-7), but just 3 shots from the top ten of the tournament, in which he still has a lot of room to work with, more so if he manages to improve his tee shots, even just the slightest of adjustments.
Gonzalo will play in the second round starting at 12:30 pm local time (1:30 pm CEST) alongside Brandon Stone and Liam Johnson.
