Gonzalo Fernández Castaño did not make it to the US Open, third big Major of the season, in the sectional qualifier held at Walton Heath (Surrey, England), a grueling 34-hole challenge in just one day. The Spanish golfer turned in two solid cards with 71 and 70 shots on the Old Course and the New Course at the British golf club, but his final total of -5 came up short in order to seal a spot in the top fourteen, which were granted a golden ticket to this Major.
One of the crucial points of the day could very well have been the unfortunate ending in the first round, with a double bogey and a bogey on the 17th and 18th holes on the Old Course, when he was ranked as one of the top golfers that morning. The golfer from Madrid did not give in, and fought hard to reach the top of the rankings again, but it was insufficient to be able to make the cut.
In any event, his game has taken a major turning point this season throughout these past weeks. Since he missed the cut in Morocco, Gonzalo has played 12 rounds of competition (counting these two rounds from the US Open sectional qualifier) with an accumulated total of -23 and not one round over par, undoubtedly a sign of regularity and consistency in his game. He’s climbed over forty places in the Race to Dubai rankings in this time, and more than fifty in the world rankings.
After a two-week break and lots of practice, the Spanish golfer will compete in the BMW International in Munich, from June 20th to June 23rd.
