Gonzalo Fernández Castaño is back in action this week in the European Tour at the Hassan II Golf Trophy in Rabat. It’s the start of a new tour, traveling from Miami, where he currently lives, flying across the pond to play in this tournament and the British Masters in two weeks.
They’re two tournaments in which he will be in search of that big break that will finally get him back on track for the 2019 season in which things just haven’t gone his way so far: he’s played in ten tournaments and has only made three cuts, and still has yet to make it through to the fight for the win this year.
It’s the first time in his career that he’ll be playing in Morocco, which comes as a surprise after fourteen years as a professional golfer, and the truth is that the Spanish golfer is quite impressed by the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam, host to the tournament, and more specifically the Red course, where he will be competing. “One of the best courses I’ve ever played on from tee to green, without a doubt”, remarked the golfer from Madrid.
Gonzalo, who was able to make it to Morocco alongside his coach, Jamie Gough, has been paying special attention to his short game throughout these past weeks, now in hopes of reaping the benefits of all the hard work, although he prefers not to have too high of expectations for what’s to come at the moment.
The Spanish golfer will play in the first round on Thursday in the morning alongside Austrian golfer, Iván Cantero, and veteran Welsh golfer, Bradley Dredge, starting at 8:55 am, local time (one hour less in Spain).
