Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño (+6) did not get off to the best start at the Hassan II Golf Trophy. In reality, the score does not accurately reflect, nor do justice to his game. The golfer from Madrid came out swinging, and put up a tough fight in a round which started off well, but a very cruel epilogue pushed him to the edge of not being able to make the cut.
Gonzalo came out with two solid birdies on the 1st and 2nd holes. Dream scenario, especially when playing in the afternoon. He made a nice putt from just outside the end of the green, followed directly after by a bogey on the 3rd, but the main problems came between the 8th and the 10th holes, where he made two bogeys in a row and a double bogey, and lost the entire rhythm of the round.
However, he continued to fight, and he made two more bogeys, but he landed a birdie on the 17th and made it to the 18th, par 5, with a partial score of +3. A final birdie would have meant being able to save the first round. However, it took him three shots to get out of the bunker next to the green, and he ended up with a painful triple bogey.
He is currently situated at five shots away from the cut, although the prediction is that it could go up to +3. If that’s the case, Gonzalo will need a very solid round of golf to make it through this Friday, although it’s not impossible.
