Gonzalo Fernández Castaño is prepped and ready to compete in the Kenya Open, with a certain optimism, despite the fact that things didn’t goes as planned in Oman, nor Qatar, where he did not make either cut. “Last week, in Qatar, I was hitting the ball much better than reflected in the final score, but I wasn’t on point with the putter, so I’m ready to test it out here, in Kenya, on a very interesting, old-fashioned course, with small greens and narrow fairways in between trees. I feel good, and in good spirits”, he says.
The course at the Karen Country Club, host to the tournament on the outskirts of Nairobi, is situated at 1,800 meters above sea level, which causes the ball to travel much farther, so it’s important to adjust the distances. Thus, the course is to be played short, which means there will be less of the driver off the tee, among other things. Each golfer seeks out the best alternative for their game, and in Fernández Castaño’s case, this week will be featuring the 5 wood as the star of the show, a club he’s been using frequently off the tee.
The golfer from Madrid will play on Thursday starting at 12:50 pm local time (10:50 am Spanish time), together with South African golfer, Haydn Porteous, and Korean golfer, Hosung Choi.
