Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+4) did not get off to a good start in the Oman Open. The Spanish golfer shot a 76, which puts him four shots away from the cut at the moment. He would need a very solid day of golf in the second round to make it through to the weekend.
Patience was not a virtue this time around. The golfer from Madrid, somewhat inconsistent off the tee, made his first birdie of the round on the 16th hole, the last par 5 at Al Mouj Golf, in the afternoon session, with higher winds and more complicated playing conditions than in the morning. However, he was dealt a harsh punishment, a triple bogey on the 17th hole, which left him with no time to react.
In any event, he’s not going to throw in the towel by any means. He’ll try to take advantage of playing in one of the first games of the day on Friday (starting at 6:45 am, local time, 3:45 am in Spain), when the wind hasn’t kicked up yet, because there’s even more wind in the forecast for the second round than the first round.
