Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (PAR) started the first round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Rolex Series tournament in the European Tour, with a 72, along with a bad taste in his mouth after the last few holes. The golfer from Madrid, amidst some important changes in his swing alongside his new coach, Jamie Gough, was off to a very solid round with three holes to go and a notable partial score of -3, only to finish with a double bogey and a bogey on the 7th and 9th holes, and unable to make the birdie on the 8th hole, par 5, one of the simplest holes on the course, thus, radically tainting the score and spoiling a job well done throughout most of the round.
It’s not a critical situation yet, because he’s currently just one shot away from the cut. The fact is that, without having completely assimilated the new concepts he’s been working on, he was progressing with a good score in the first round, but it’s a harsh course where errors are very costly, which is why it’s always more frustrating to slip up at the end. In any case, he had some great shots, and made a total of four birdies, which is never a bad stat.
This Thursday, he’ll play in the second round in the morning, starting at 7:20 am local time in Abu Dhabi, in the first game of the day to break in the course, with the objective of making the cut without having to put too much pressure on himself.
