Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-3) reached his first objective in the Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open, which unfolded after the first round; to make the cut and create an opportunity for higher aspirations throughout the weekend. He did it, and top of that, he was calm and collected, and not too many slip-ups along the way.
The Spanish golfer shot a 69 in the second round, in control of the situation (just one bogey for the day), very skillfully, working his magic around the green when he needed it the most to come out clean from some sticky situations. At the moment, the par 5s are giving him some issues at the Four Seasons Golf Club Mauritius at Anahita (Beau Champ, Mauritius), due to the fact that in the first two rounds, he’s accumulated a total of -1 on the long holes of the course, falling short in comparison to his competition.
It’s the eternal debate: it can’t be obligatory to make birdies on these holes, true, but on the other hand, they are still prone to being more favorable for getting good scores. The proof is that out of the 45 golfers that are ahead of Gonzalo in the rankings, only one (French golfer Sordet) got a worse score than him on the par 5s.
The tournament leader, American golfer Kurt Kitayama (-14), is currently very far off from Gonzalo, but the top ten of the tournament, for example, is just five shots away, still an attainable goal.
Fernández Castaño will play in the third round at 4:46 in the morning on Saturday (Spanish time) with South African golfer Tyrone Ryan.
