Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+3) shot a 73 in the first round of the Honma Hong Kong Open, placing him far from the head of the tournament (eight shots from the leaders, Rai, Scrivener and Miyazato), although he still hasn’t exhausted all of his options, seeing as how the cut could be established on Friday somewhere around a score of +2, or even +3.
The golfer from Madrid, working out a few kinks in his long game, was not able to dominate the complicated greens at the Hong Kong Golf Club either, to the point where he finished the round with just one birdie. Nor did he show the finesse he’s had recently on the recoveries around the green.
In any event, his situation at the start of the 2019 season is not a lost cause, far from it in fact, as the close rankings allow for many possibilities for everyone (the top fifty on the scoreboard are all within five shots of each other) although, evidently, he’ll need a solid second round.
He’ll play on Friday at eight in the morning, local time (at one in the morning on Friday, Spanish time).
