Gonzalo Fernández Castaño will kick off the 2019 season today, coming off last season’s thrilling, close finale where he managed to save the rights to play in the complete European Tour with a solid performance in the Andalucía Valderrama Masters. The stage is set in the Honma Hong Kong Open, first tournament on the 2019 European Tour calendar, which he’ll be attending for the first time in his career.
Despite it being his first time, it’s not bad at all for Gonzalo to start out in the Far East, seeing as how throughout his career, he's played on that side of the globe in 32 tournaments and has accumulated three wins there as well (two in China and one in Singapore), four second places and ten top 5s. An excellent presentation letter for the moment he tees off for the first time on the 1st hole at the Hong Kong Golf Club.
All scoreboards are set at zero and, after making the decision to focus solely on the European Tour, the Spanish golfer will begin this chapter of his career with the ambitious goal of returning to the big events on the international calendar, which is why it’s crucial to continue to move up in the world rankings (last year in 2018, he was over 800th place in the world, and this week he’s sitting at 439) while at the same time, climbing as high up as possible in the European rankings, the Race to Dubai.
Fernando Castaño will play this Thursday at 12:20 (5:20 in the morning, Spanish time) with Malaysian golfer Danny Chia and Australian golfer Jason Norris.
