Gonzalo Fernández Castaño likes to lay it straight, thus, he himself broke out the calculator to find out exactly what he needs this week in the Andalucía Valderrama Masters to finish in a minimum of 116th place in the Race to Dubai, which would secure the rights to play in the European Tour 2019 season. And the outcome is quite clear: he needs to end up among the top 15 to guarantee he reaches his goal.
This Thursday, he’ll play with Raphael Jacquelin and Nacho Elvira starting at 1:55 pm (Spanish time) and according to the weather forecast, with little wind, or at least not too much, and no rain (in the morning throughout the first hours of play, however, it will rain on the San Roque course).
The Madrid native has played in seven tournaments at Valderrama throughout his career, and his results have been pretty solid and stable, although he still hasn’t had that big, sound performance that he dreams of on one of his favorite courses (in fact, he’s been a member of the club for a long time, and he still is even after having left for the US). It’s true that last year, he did not make the cut, but in 2011 he finished in 12th place, his best performance yet, and previously he had come in around twentieth place. In the days leading up to the tournament, Gonzalo has been very positive, with great vibes, ready for battle.
