Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+3) went through a tough setback in the second round at the Alfred Dunhill Links, held on three separate courses on the east coast of Scotland (Kingsbarns, St. Andrews and Carnoustie), after shooting a 77 at Carnoustie, which has complicated things as far as making the cut next round. He is currently positioned at PAR.
The golfer from Madrid, who stood out in a very difficult first round, rising to the challenge against the cold and the wind successfully, could not make one single birdie today. His putt, of course, was not his ally, and nothing turned out as it should have in his attempt to defend his position at the top of the rankings. He started out with an early bogey on the 11th hole at Carnoustie, after teeing off on the 10th hole, which was followed by nine consecutive pars, maintaining the order and balance despite having come to somewhat of a standstill. However, an unfortunate end to the round with three bogeys on the last four holes caused him to lose a lot of ground.
The Spanish golfer needs a good performance this Saturday on the Old Course at St. Andrews to make the cut and earn the right to play in the fourth and definitive round on Sunday, also on the Old Course, because he is not currently within the established cut line, which will fluctuate somewhat based on how hard the wind blows in the third round.
