Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño ended the Spanish Open with a 75, finishing in 49th place. Evidently, the Spanish golfer ended up far from where he would have liked, but at the very least, he made it through all four rounds and was able to set foot on his native country again after five months in the US.
This week was bittersweet. He had a lot of nice shots, but he was also harshly punished for his errors. It's the inconsistency that has been holding him back since the beginning of the season, which he hasn't quite managed to pull away from yet.
Things being how they are, the best part of the weekend for Gonzalo happened on Saturday afternoon, more or less at the same time of the PGA Catalonian tournament. He went to Camp Nou to watch the League match live between Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid, his team. Since it couldn't have been any other way, as an Atleti fan, he left with a sensational feeling after the tie. The league was in the bag.
Fernández-Castaño will spend a few days in Madrid with his family and will then fly back on Sunday to the US. Next week, he'll return to play at the Memorial Tournament.
The final victory at the Spanish Open went to Miguel Ángel Jiménez with an incredible performance, who defeated Thomas Pieters and Richard Green on the first hole of the tiebreaker.
