Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño dropped out of the race to the PGA Tour card finish line. He shot a 72 in the final round of the WinCo Foods Portland Open, which bumped him down to 60th place in the rankings, leaving him just outside the margin of the top 75 of the Web.com Tour order of merit. Thus, he will not be competing in the Tour Finals for the first time in his career.
Gonzalo was just one step away. An inconsistent weekend with lots of problems from tee to green, caused him to drop down to 76th place in the rankings. It’s like getting fourth place in the Olympics. It’s most definitely the most painful spot to be in, a tough blow. The difference in reaching or not reaching the goal, once again, comes down to a matter of small details in golf. The distance from 75th place was just 180 dollars, a small detail, one shot in the extent of an entire season, or who knows if it could have been a drive that went half a meter long to the right…
That being said, Gonzalo will not be granted the PGA Tour card for next year, although he did manage to maintain the Web.com Tour card. The goal now is to make it to the School in December in attempts to improve his ranking. Meanwhile, the most immediate future entails Gonzalo in Europe. The golfer from Madrid will attempt to maintain the European Tour card throughout the eight tournaments left in the season. For the moment, he’s aiming at playing within two weeks in the Made in Denmark. He’s currently in 121st place in the Race to Dubai, and the top 121 golfers will maintain the card.
