Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño (-6) needs a hail Mary this week, he knows it, and he’s already started the mission off quite well. The Spanish golfer shot a 65 in the first round of the WinCo Foods Portland Open, and is now in the top 5 of the tournament.
Gonzalo needs a win in Oregon in order to secure the PGA Tour card for next season. It’s the only way of finishing the regular season among the top 25 and the WinCo Foods is the last tournament. It’s the end of the line. All or nothing.
He also needs to secure a spot int he top 75, which if he continues at this rate, he’s got in the bag, although he still needs to make the cut and finish the job, and the higher up he is, the less he’ll have to worry about everything else.
Gonzalo polished off this fantastic round with a magnificent day with the putter. He capitalized on a good amount of the options for birdies that he created, and he recovered remarkably, with a sensational percentage of six out of seven. He’s four shots away from the leader, American golfer Derek Ernst.
One step at a time, one battle a time, and he’s already made it past the first test.
