Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño will play in the WinCo Foods Portland Open starting this Thursday, Web.com Tour tournament which will bring the regular season of the American silver division tour to an end. In other words, this Sunday, when the tournament finishes, we’ll already know which golfers will earn the PGA Tour card for next year, and who will at least get a second chance to try again in the Tour Finals.
These are Gonzalo’s two objectives, and the results he needs to achieve these goals are clear as day. To make it to the top 25 in the Web rankings, and thus earn the PGA Tour card, the only option is to win. There is no other option. Only a victory would earn him a spot in the PGA next year.
Meanwhile, the ideal scenario is to move up a few positions in order to hold onto his spot in the Tour Finals at the very least. The top 75 golfers in the order of merit will play, and Gonzalo is currently in 72nd place. He’s already paved the way, but it’s still not definitive. As long as he is fighting for the win, he will definitively solidify his presence.
That being said, Gonzalo has a date with the epic final tournament. It’s like the last lap of a Grand Prix motorcycle race in which all drivers are together in one pack. The golfer from Madrid is confident in being able to take the lead in the last curve for the victory, which would completely change the entire outlook on the season.
