Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-6) finished out his participation in the Ellie Mae Classic with a 70, PAR for the day, score which did not allow him to move up at all in the rankings. After two inspiring first rounds, the Spanish golfer finished the weekend with insufficient results in a tournament where, once again, it was necessary to make a lot of birdies to be in the running for the win, claimed by American golfer, Trevor Cone (-23) in the end.
The problem is that the golfer from Madrid went down four spots in the Web.com ranking (now in 72nd place), and he still has to defend his place in the top 75 in the last tournament on the regular season calendar, next week in Oregon, which would allow him to directly access the Tour Finals, as well as to maintain the rights to play in the 2019 season.
With respect to the more ambitious goal, to reach the top 25 of the tour which will automatically grant him the 2018-2019 PGA Tour card, there’s only one option for Gonzalo, which is to win the WinCo Foods Portland Open next week, the last tournament of the regular season.
