Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-8) shot another 66 in the second round of the Ellie Mae Classic, and has moved up in the rankings, placing him on the brink of the top ten of the tournament (13th) and eight shots from the leader, American golfer Alex Prough (-16), who has made himself untouchable for the moment with a 64 and a 60 at TPC Stonebrae (Hayward, California).
Brilliant effort by the Spanish golfer in the second round, who has managed to keep his goal of finishing with a good score afloat, which will allow to continue dreaming, even about the possibility of reaching the top 25 of the Web.com rankings by the end of the regular season, which is next week with the WinCo Foods Portland Open, in which Gonzalo will participate.
The first nine holes of the round were a roller coaster ride, considering Gonzalo made two eagles (3rd and 9th holes), two birdies, one bogey and a double bogey. More birdies on the 11th and 13th holes restored his faith, although a bogey on the last par 5 of the course (15th hole), lowered his morale on the final stretch. The golfer from Madrid, who caught one hundred percent of the fairways off the tee in this second round, didn’t hesitate in taking risks on the second shots and going for all of the flags. At TPC Stonebrae, in the good playing conditions there have been this week, low scores are necessary to remain at the top. That being said, some wind is expected over the weekend, this course’s real defense.
