Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-6) has managed to keep all his options open in the KC Golf Classic after living through, suffering through and enjoying a very peculiar second round in which he shot a 71, and is currently seven shots away from the leaders, Austrian golfer Sepp Straka and American golfer Kyle Jones.
The golfer from Madrid started the round off with a discouraging triple bogey on the first hole, mostly considering the fact that he made his second shot from the middle of the fairway. But an error on the yardage books, which from the chosen position of reference showed more than a 15-yard difference from where it was in reality, contributed to the ball landing behind the green, making for a disastrous situation.
However, Gonzalo did not lose faith, and on a very windy day, he took advantage of the fact that it was blowing in his favor on the first par 5 at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate (Overland Park, Kansas) to respond with a fantastic eagle: very long drive, 7 iron from 225 yards away and a putt from within four meters. On the 13th hole, he replicated the whole operation with another eagle: long drive, pitching wedge from 160 yards and another putt from around four meters away. Additionally, the Spanish golfer made four more birdies to make up for the unfortunate start and the other bogeys which, on such a windy, chaotic day, also showed up on his card, leading him to finish off the round just under par and, of course, he ended up making the cut and is now in the top 25 of the tournament.
This Saturday, he’ll play with Michael Johnson starting at 10:40 am local time (5:40 pm Spanish time).
