Gonzalo Fernández Castaño will start the long race to the finish line of the Web.com with the Price Cutter Charity Championship this week, in which there are four tournaments left before going into the Web.com Tour Finals. After the intense European tour, in which he played in four tournaments, the golfer from Madrid needs to focus on achieving his goals on the other side of the Atlantic, which are no small feat, indeed.
First off, starting with the Highland Springs Country Club this week (Springfield, Missouri) in 66th place in the Web.com, the most important thing he needs to do is secure his spot in the top 75 of the rankings, which will allow him to play in the Finals, where he would have another opportunity to earn back the rights to play in the PGA Tour for the 2018-19 season. Additionally, a spot in the top 75 would secure his spot in the Web.com 2019, worst-case scenario.
But it goes without saying that Gonzalo is gunning for the bigger goal, the main one, which is to reach the top 25 of the rankings by the end of the regular season, which would mean he would be a PGA Tour golfer once again for next season. In order to get a sense of the difficulty of his mission: winning this week in Missouri would place him well into the top 25, but a sole second place would leave him right on the brink.
The Price Cutter is a tournament that has been won with a score of -20 and below since 2002, so it’s time to buckle down on the greens because a low score is crucial each round in order to stay at the top. Fernández Castaño will play in the first round on Thursday starting at 1:15 pm local time (8:15 pm Spanish time) with American golfers Seth Reeves and Lee McCoy.
