Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño went to war, yet again, today on the golf course. This time, his enemy was the Catalonia PGA tournament, a fierce rival that wasn't easy to face at all during this first round of the Spanish Open.
A difficult, unforgiving rough, together with a significant amount of wind that picked up in the afternoon, made for a complicated game.
Gonzalo came out ready to brush off the wounds from the tough season in the US. He started off strong with three birdies and just one bogey on the first six holes. However, as the day went on, the tides turned, but it wasn't without a fight. “It's what happens when you haven't refined your swing, the rounds are inconsistent,” says the Spanish golfer.
Fernández-Castaño ended with a 73 and is currently ranked in the top 50 of the tournament. The best news is, he left with a good taste in his mouth despite a tough nine holes in which he made a 38, and he's not at all far from the leader, Eddie Pepperell. It's only a difference of five shots, very few when considering there are 54 holes left to play. Although ,Gonzalo's first and foremost goal is to tighten up his game where he can to bring some consistency back to his play. From there, the rest will follow. Gonzalo will play in the second round tomorrow starting at 8:10 along with Matteo Manassero and Nicolas Colsaerts for the second time in a row.
