Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-1) shot a 71 in the Irish Open, off to a good start, mostly considering the fact that he played in the afternoon, a bit more complicated than in the morning, as the greens were less receptive.
The golfer from Madrid had everything under control in almost every moment on a course, the Glashedy Links at Ballyliffin Golf Club, which resulted in more than twenty cards with 77 shots and above, and with very acceptable weather conditions at that on the Northern Irish terrain.
On the final stretch of the round, he made the only two bogeys on his card (15th and 16th holes), but came back quickly with a birdie on the 17th, par 5, beating the course in the showdown and finishing with a nice par on the 18th, which was one of the two most difficult holes of the course. At just four shots away from the leader, golfer from New Zealand Ryan Fox (-5), he’s in a good position to achieve any and all goals this week.
The Spanish golfer will play in the second round this Friday starting at 10:10 am (Spanish time) with Indian golfer Chawrasia and South African golfer Coetzee.
