Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-2) shot his second 71 in a row in the Irish Open, a noteworthy score on a course, the Glashedy Links at the Ballyliffin Golf Club, which is not making it easy on any golfer, despite the good weather reigning over Northern Ireland. The golfer from Madrid, in fact, is now well-positioned going into the weekend, in the top 20 of the tournament and six shots from the leaders, Ryan Fox and Matthieu Pavon.
Gonzalo even made it to the top of the pack with a partial score of three under par after the first ten holes, having started on the 10th hole in the second round, thanks to a solid, stable game which was quite brilliant at times, although he lost some ground in the final stretch with two bogeys on the 6th and 9th holes. In any event, Gonzalo passed his first objective with flying colors, which was to make the cut and to leave all options open for the last 36 holes.
Keep in mind that a solitary sixth or seventh place in this Rolex Series event almost guarantees Fernández Castaño the rights to play in the European Tour in 2019, a goal which is currently just four shots away. The import thing to note is the balance and concentration exhibited in these first two rounds, apart from the apparent improvement in his long game with respect to last week in France.
The Spanish golfer will play in the third round starting at 12:25 am (Spanish time) with George Coetzee.
