Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+8) shot a 79 in the first, very tough round of the French Open, leaving him in a complicated situation as far as the cut. The wind made for an absolute nightmare on the course, which is already difficult in and of itself, mostly in the afternoon session, when Gonzalo played.
Gonzalo’s round started off with a lot of errors and four bogeys in a row on the first five holes, but then things began to look upward toward an epic comeback with three birdies between the 11th and 14th holes, with some excellent shots, excelling with the best club in the bag lately, the putter. However, one ball that went to the water on the 15th hole, and another stuck in the sand on the 16th made for a terrible end of the round, leaving the Spanish golfer in a critical situation.
If the wind keeps coming in strong on Friday, the cut could be establish around +5 or +6, in which case, Gonzalo would still have a shot at making it through to the weekend. He would play in the morning session, always much simpler to say the least, in the event he needs to play under par, big words this week at the Golf National (only twelve golfers managed to beat the course in the first round).
Gonzalo will play to accomplish this mission, opening the second round starting at 7:30 am (Spanish time).
