Gonzalo Fernández Castaño will compete in the French Open this week, his third participation in a Rolex Series tournament (he played in the BMW at Wentworth and the Italian Open these past weeks), on the Albatross course at the Golf National, which has changed slightly since the last time he played there in 2013 and which, on the other hand, has never been willing to budge much for Gonzalo.
The first challenge to face this week will be to finish above 31st place, which is his best result to date on this course, in 2009 and 2012. The last round of the BMW International Open held last week in Germany is a good reference point to fall back on, a noteworthy 68 which allowed him to move up in the rankings on Sunday, which could come in handy to resolve doubts after some inconsistency with the irons in the practice rounds at the Golf National.
Gonzalo is at a pivotal point in the season, where his main goal is to succeed in, or at least gain a lot of ground in maintaining the rights to play in the European Tour in 2019. After France, he’ll play in the qualifying round of the British Open next Tuesday, on a quest to secure a spot in the third ‘major’ of the season. Right after, he’ll play in the Irish Open, and he still has a chance at making it to the Scottish Open, held directly after that.
The Spanish golfer will play on Thursday at 12:40 am (Spanish time) with Scottish golfer Marc Warren and British golfer David Howell.
