Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (+1) shot a 73 in the first round of the BMW International Open, a notable score considering the playing conditions at the Golf Club Gut Larchenhof, close to Cologne: the leader, French golfer Sebastien Gros, is currently at -4, the top ten of the tournament in the -2 range, and the cut is established at +2 for the moment, and tomorrow it could easily be +3.
The wind was blowing strong throughout most of the day, which together with the rough which was dense and unforgiving, brought on many difficulties for the golfers on a course in which, additionally, the recoveries around the green were particularly complicated. The golfer from Madrid finished the round with three bogeys and two birdies, well-crafted, and he is still within reach of any objective this week.
The last time Gonzalo played in this tournament, and on this same course, was in 2012 and he finished in third place, just one shot behind the winner, so there’s a good prospect going into the tournament seeing as how the last time he started off with a 71 and farther from the top of the rankings than he is now...
This Friday, he’ll play in the afternoon starting at 1:10 pm, together with his good friend, Italian golfer Andrea Pavan and French golfer Raphael Jacquelin.
