Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-17) shot a magnificent 62 today, finishing with the best score of the last round in the BMW Charity Pro-Am at the Thornblade Club (Greer, South Carolina), which caused him to sky rocket 44 positions up in the rankings, finishing in 19th place and most importantly, he moved up five spots in the Web.com Tour rankings (now in 42nd place, closer to the top 25). A reason to celebrate for the Spanish golfer, who had already turned in a fantastic card of 65 shots last Thursday on the same course.
Gonzalo was on fire with the putter in the last and definitive round. The golfer from Madrid was fierce on the greens, with an average of 1.1 putts per regulation green, outrageous stats, although a few putts were landed from a very close proximity thanks to some outstanding second shots. Additionally, he was efficient and very accurate on his recoveries around the green, making six out of the seven he came up against.
The winner, American golfer Michael Arnaud (-27), finished pretty far out of reach for Gonzalo, but the most important part was the boost to his confidence and overall morale at a pivotal point in the season. This score of 62 shots is his best ever in the US, and the second best of his career, just behind the 61 he shot in Singapur which was the score that led him to win four years ago.
The Spanish golfer will now make another mini European tour, where he’ll play in two high-stakes tournaments over the next two weeks, the BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth and the Italian Open, both part of the Rolex Series, in which he can take an important step forward in his attempt to maintain the rights to play in the European Tour in 2019. In any event, there’s no better way to return to the Old Continent than with these sensational vibes.
