Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño ended up with a 70 in the last round of THE PLAYERS Championship. The Spanish golfer left the PGA Tour tournament with a good taste in his mouth, having played three days at a good level, and having fought through a tough Friday afternoon where he showed he was capable ofplaying with the best of the best.
Gonzalo finished with a total result of -2, 38th place, closer than what the numbers indicate from bordering on a dream week. It's another step forward. His second participation in THE PLAYERS and his first cut. Continually advancing, although maybe the Spanish golfer would have liked to move forward more quickly.
Yesterday he made five birdies and three bogeys, and wound up with a powerful partial score of three under par on the last ten holes. All symptoms are positive. His drive, the principle force propelling the first part of the season, is starting to straighten out, his irons have never let up with their addiction to the hole flags (his shot yesterday on the 13th was unbelievable) and his putt is working better than ever. Now, the only thing left is to bring it all together during the next four rounds to fight for the win. Just the details. Nothing else.
The final victory of THE PLAYERS went to Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño's good friend. Martin Kaymer took home the prize after finishing with a total of -13, and just behind him were Jim Furyk (-12) and Sergio García (-11). Fernandez-Castaño was one of the first to congratulate the German golfer: “really proud of you.”
Gonzalo is now headed for Spain. He'll be back on his native land for the first time in 2014 to play the Spanish Open in the Catalan PGA Tour.
