Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño (-1) shot a commendable 71 in the first round of the Web.com Tour United Leasing & Finance Championship. The golfer from Madrid survived the onslaught at the Victoria Golf Club, a classic style, highly demanding course, where it’s important to be very accurate from tee to green in order to make it through.
Gonzalo’s round started with a bloody exchange of shots with the Indiana course. Between the 11th and the 17th holes (he started on the 10th) he only made one par, while the rest were a mixture of birdies and bogeys. Starting with the 18th, there was a ceasefire, up until it ended with a birdie on the 8th hole to finish off with a vibrant partial victory.
Gonzalo is now in thirteenth place, just one shot from the top ten and seven from the provisional leader, Maverick McNealy, who shot an exceptional 64 in the first round.
