Gonzalo Fernández Castaño did not finish the Open de España at the National Center in Madrid as he had hoped. He fought to the bitter end to make the cut, despite the fact that he never quite felt comfortable at any given time. He paved the way for an amazing comeback on the back nine of the National Center course, and had high hopes after the outstanding eagle on the 5th hole. There were four left to play (he started on the 10th) and he needed two birdies.
However, a bogey on the 6th hole stopped him dead in his tracks. The mission turned nearly impossible at that point, and he finished with three pars for a total of 70 shots. He improved on his performance from Thursday, but it wasn’t enough to play through the weekend. The tournament left a doubly bad taste in his mouth, for not having made the cut, and additionally at home, in Madrid, playing amidst all his fans.
In any event, golf goes on and Gonzalo already has his first opportunity this week for a comeback. He can get the thorn out of his side in the North Mississippi Classic, Web.com tour tournament held on the Country Club of Oxford course. It’s a new chance to secure his spot in the top 25 of the Web.com rankings, his top priority this season to earn back the rights to play in the PGA Tour.
Gonzalo will play this Thursday starting at 7:33 pm, Spanish time.
