Gonzalo Fernández Castaño shot a 73 in the first round of the Open de España. It wasn’t the ideal start, affected by very difficult playing conditions, with wind and rain at the National Center golf course in Madrid.
The Spanish golfer played over par after turning in a card with two birdies and three bogeys. He’s got a lot of work ahead on a course where birdies are abundant and the rounds are low. The cut is estimated to be around three under par, which means that Gonzalo will need a big comeback in the second round in order to play through the weekend at this event on the European Tour calendar.
Gonzalo is back home again after many years, his city, the place where he’s not only played golf the majority of his life, but also where he he competed in the Madrid Masters, on this same course in 2009.
Gonzalo will be playing the second round in the morning session, which theoretically could be uncharted territory, allowing for him to finish with a low score and continue in the fight.
