Gonzalo Fernández Castaño (-15) finished in fourth place in the Qatar Masters after shooting a 68 in the last round, in which he even entertained the idea of passing up the leader, finishing three shots away from the winner, Eddie Pepperell (-18). In any event, they’re fantastic results in his return to the European Tour after having missed the cut last week in Oman.
The Spanish golfer started with birdies on the 1st and 4th holes, which immediately shot him up to the fight for the win because the leaders started off cold, and even started to lose ground, which was Oliver Fisher’s case. Three more birdies in a row on the 10th, 11th and 12th holes canceled out the bogey on the 9th and opened up a lot of options at the top of the rankings, and he even had another good opportunity on the 13th to keep the dream alive. After that, what was missing was the final touch on the tail end of the course, just as he himself admitted right after finishing the round: “I think I needed something extra on Saturday and Sunday from the 16th to the 18 holes, because they’re holes where you can make birdies and I shot par both days, but I’m happy with the week because I played really well from tee to green and I also putted well.”
This fourth place is the Spanish golfer’s best performance in the European Tour since he won the BMW Masters in Shanghai in October 2013, although it’s true he has been competing the majority of the time in the US since then. Now, he will return to American territory, where he’ll start again shortly in the Web.com.
