Gonzalo Fernández Castaño’s (-4) re-encounter with the Doha Golf Club was outstanding: he shot a 68 in the first round of the Qatar Masters, leaving him in 15th place, three shots away from the leaders.
This is Fernández Castaño’s thirtieth round on this course since his debut in the 2006 edition, and he had only shot better than a 68 on three other occasions. The Spanish golfer confessed after finishing the round that the absence of wind, one of the course’s habitual obstacles, and a ‘friendly’ positioning of the flag made things easier on the golfers in the first round.
The golfer from Madrid was especially accurate on the second shots, having caught more than eighty percent of the regulation greens, finishing with just one bogey and five birdies. On Friday, he’ll play at 10:30 (Spanish time).
